The short story
Tim Payne was born in Auckland in 1994 and became a centre-back: football's least glamorous, most necessary job. He had a spell at Blackburn in England and put down roots at Wellington Phoenix.
He defended the All Whites with the humility of someone who does the dirty work without asking for applause. Until one post changed everything: in days, the whole world learned his name.
There was no wonder goal, no scandal. There was love. A portable identity anyone can wear — because we are all Tim Payne.
